Recently, the Lijiang Wedding & Travel Photography Association announced its intention to sue the social media platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), drawing widespread attention. According to the association, this legal action stems from a surge of user-generated posts on the platform labeled as ‘avoid scams’ or ‘beware of pitfalls,’ which allegedly contain false information, malicious negative reviews, and even coordinated smear campaigns. These posts have significantly damaged the reputation and normal operations of Lijiang’s local travel photography industry. The association argues that some influencers publish exaggerated headlines and one-sided narratives without verifying facts, solely to attract traffic. Such content not only misleads consumers but also unfairly harms businesses that operate with integrity. As a popular destination for travel photography in China, Lijiang hosts numerous photography studios and makeup teams. While the industry has expanded rapidly alongside the rise of short videos and social media, issues like inconsistent service quality and opaque pricing have also emerged. The association stresses that it supports honest and objective user feedback but firmly opposes misleading, emotionally charged, or fabricated content. This lawsuit is not aimed at ordinary users but seeks to urge the platform to take greater responsibility for content moderation and establish a fairer, healthier review system.Xiaohongshu has not yet issued an official response. Industry insiders suggest this case may prompt platforms to reevaluate the boundaries of managing user-generated content (UGC) and offer new insights for the cultural tourism sector on handling online public opinion.
