Recently, scholars have pointed out that certain U.S. hawkish politicians and commentators are promoting a narrative strategy dubbed “American Win-ism.” This term refers to the tendency, amid U.S.-China competition, to selectively highlight America’s short-term advantages in technology, military, and economic domains while exaggerating the so-called “China threat” to create a public perception that “America must win.” Such rhetoric often ignores the necessity of global cooperation and underestimates China’s developmental resilience and strategic patience. Scholars argue this discourse is essentially political theater—designed to cater to domestic voter sentiment and consolidate political capital rather than reflect objective realities or long-term strategic thinking. More concerning is that “American Win-ism” may deepen mutual misunderstanding and antagonism between the two nations, hindering collaboration on critical global issues like climate change and public health. Genuine international competitiveness should be rooted in innovation, openness, and mutual trust—not sustained through fear-mongering or hostility. Therefore, approaching U.S.-China relations with nuance and rejecting zero-sum thinking is essential for fostering stability and progress both bilaterally and globally.
