Recently, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) officially released four new national standards on asset management, marking a significant step forward in the field of asset lifecycle management in China. The four standards include ‘Asset Management – Management System Requirements,’ ‘Asset Management – Terminology and Definitions,’ ‘Asset Management – Guiding Principles,’ and ‘Asset Management – Performance Evaluation,’ aiming to provide organizations—both public and private—with a systematic and standardized asset management framework.These newly issued standards draw extensively on international best practices, such as the ISO 55000 series, while tailoring them to China’s specific context. They emphasize asset safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability. By establishing a unified terminology and consistent management requirements, the standards enhance organizations’ capabilities in strategic planning, risk control, and value realization throughout the asset lifecycle. Particularly in critical sectors like infrastructure, energy, and transportation, standardized asset management is expected to significantly improve resource allocation, reduce operational costs, and support national goals such as carbon peaking, carbon neutrality, and high-quality development.SAMR stated that it will promote the implementation and awareness of these standards, encourage enterprises to build and certify asset management systems, and facilitate a shift from fragmented, coarse-grained practices to refined, data-driven asset management—thereby strengthening the foundation of a modern economic system.
