Recently, global semiconductor manufacturing leader TSMC has accelerated its global expansion strategy, entering what observers call a ‘factory-building frenzy.’ Driven by surging chip demand, geopolitical pressures, and strong customer demands for supply chain diversification, TSMC is not only expanding capacity in Taiwan but also making massive investments in new fabs across the U.S., Japan, and Germany. For instance, its 5nm and 4nm wafer plants in Arizona are nearing mass production, with plans already underway for an even more advanced 2nm facility. Its factory in Kumamoto, Japan, began operations in 2024, and a new plant in Dresden, Germany, has been confirmed to focus on automotive and industrial chips. This marks a strategic shift from TSMC’s historically Taiwan-centric manufacturing model toward a more geographically diversified production network. Although overseas expansion involves high costs and complex technology transfers, TSMC views it as essential for maintaining long-term competitiveness and customer trust—especially with substantial government subsidies sweetening the deals. However, rapid growth also brings challenges such as talent shortages, operational efficiency, and yield ramp-up timelines. Overall, TSMC’s aggressive building spree represents both a significant opportunity and a major test of its management and technical integration capabilities.
