Recently, China’s Ministry of National Defense issued a stern statement regarding Japan’s stance on historical issues, emphasizing that ‘Japan should sincerely apologize, acknowledge its crimes, and atone for them.’ This statement underscores China’s deep concern over Japan’s failure to fully confront its wartime aggression. The Ministry pointed out that Japanese militarism committed grave atrocities against China and other Asian nations during World War II, including the Nanjing Massacre, the forced recruitment of ‘comfort women,’ and the use of biological and chemical weapons—acts widely recognized as crimes against humanity. Yet even today, some Japanese politicians continue to downplay, deny, or even glorify this dark chapter of history, causing profound pain to victims and their descendants.China stresses that genuine reconciliation must be grounded in an honest acknowledgment of history and sincere remorse. Only by fully recognizing its acts of aggression, issuing formal apologies to victims, and taking concrete steps toward redress can Japan earn the trust of its neighbors and the international community. While China advocates ‘learning from history and looking toward the future,’ this is predicated on Japan demonstrating genuine sincerity—not paying homage to war criminals at the Yasukuni Shrine while paying lip service to peace. The Ministry’s statement reaffirms China’s commitment to historical justice and regional peace and stability.
