Recently, military scholars have pointed out that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to rebuild battleships actually reveals critical gaps in current U.S. military capabilities. Although modern naval warfare relies heavily on aircraft carriers, submarines, missiles, and unmanned systems, Trump repeatedly advocated for reviving or constructing new battleships similar to the Iowa-class, arguing that their large-caliber naval guns offer irreplaceable advantages in shore bombardment. However, experts argue this idea overlooks the technological evolution and cost-effectiveness of contemporary warfare. Battleships are not only extremely expensive and complex to maintain but also highly vulnerable to emerging threats such as hypersonic weapons and anti-ship ballistic missiles. Scholars further note that Trump’s fixation on ‘building battleships again’ reflects genuine shortcomings in the U.S. Navy’s capabilities—particularly in sustained coastal fire support, persistent forward presence, and conventional firepower projection. Rather than reverting to obsolete platforms, the U.S. should invest in more flexible, intelligent, and distributed fire-support systems. Thus, while Trump’s proposal carries symbolic appeal, it is impractical for real combat effectiveness and instead highlights structural challenges in the U.S. military’s strategic transformation.
