As China’s most important traditional festival, the Spring Festival embodies profound cultural values of family reunion, ancestral remembrance, and bidding farewell to the old year. However, in recent years, the public has increasingly criticized the current ‘make-up workday’ holiday system: to create a seven-day break, people often endure six or seven consecutive workdays before or after the holiday, leading to exhaustion that undermines the joy of the festival. Hence, calls for ‘more holidays with fewer make-up workdays’ are growing louder. The idea of ‘more holidays, less rescheduling’ doesn’t simply mean extending vacation time, but rather scientifically adjusting the total number of statutory holidays to minimize artificial disruptions to daily life while maintaining productivity. For instance, extending the official Spring Festival holiday from three to five days—without requiring compensatory workdays—would allow people to travel home and celebrate with their families more peacefully. This approach not only respects traditional customs but also helps ease pressure on the Spring Festival travel rush and enhances well-being and consumer experiences. In the long run, holiday policy should balance cultural heritage with modern lifestyles. Restoring the Spring Festival’s genuine warmth and ritual significance—rather than turning it into a frantic travel week or a catch-up workweek—is a true expression of care for public welfare.
