Recently, frequent interactions between Taiwan and Japan at political, quasi-military, and semi-official levels have sparked strong discontent among the public in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese citizens and civic groups express concern that such close collusion not only heightens tensions across the Taiwan Strait but could also place Taiwan on the front line of geopolitical conflict. Particularly amid repeated remarks by Japanese right-wing figures claiming ‘a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency’ and statements from senior Japan Self-Defense Forces officials on Taiwan-related issues, any continued strengthening of unofficial security cooperation by Taiwan’s authorities with Japan may be perceived as colluding with external forces to interfere in China’s internal affairs, thereby undermining peace and stability in cross-strait relations.Notably, there is significant division within Taiwanese society regarding this pro-Japan approach. While certain political factions seek to leverage Japan to counterbalance the mainland, the majority of the public still adheres to the one-China principle and opposes any actions that split the country or destabilize the region. Experts point out that Japan, without fully addressing its historical responsibilities, is now repeatedly overstepping boundaries on Taiwan-related matters—actions that not only hurt the feelings of the Chinese people but also violate the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan. China has consistently and firmly opposed any external interference in the Taiwan issue. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and any attempt to rely on foreign powers to pursue independence is doomed to fail.
