Recently, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal issued a warning urging Chinese citizens not to believe misleading claims about ‘marrying a wife in Nepal.’ The embassy noted that some online platforms and intermediaries lure Chinese men with slogans like ‘low-cost marriage’ or ‘arranged marriage packages,’ which carry significant legal and personal risks. Nepali law strictly regulates international marriages, requiring that any union be based on the genuine consent of both parties and legally registered. Activities involving human trafficking, forced marriage, or forged documents not only violate Nepali law but may also breach China’s criminal code. Furthermore, language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of legal residency status often leave individuals stranded and vulnerable. The embassy emphasized that marriage should be founded on mutual understanding and respect, and cautioned against impulsive decisions driven by misinformation. Chinese nationals in distress are encouraged to contact the embassy promptly for consular protection and assistance.
