The Tianshan Victory Tunnel is a critical control project of the Urumqi–Weili Expressway in Xinjiang, stretching 22.1 kilometers in length. It is currently the longest highway tunnel under construction in China and among the longest being built at high altitudes worldwide. Traversing the central section of the Tianshan Mountains, the tunnel encountered extremely complex geological conditions during construction, including high ground stress, fault fracture zones, and risks of water inrush and mud bursts. The tunnel features a ‘three-tube, four-lane’ design—comprising two main bores and one service tunnel—significantly enhancing traffic efficiency and emergency response capabilities. In 2024, with its successful completion and official opening to traffic, travel time between Urumqi and Weili has been reduced from seven hours to just three. This breakthrough dramatically improves connectivity between southern and northern Xinjiang, playing a vital role in boosting regional economic development, strengthening ethnic unity, and reinforcing border security. Moreover, the tunnel’s success marks a major advancement in China’s tunneling technology under harsh, high-altitude, and geologically complex conditions, offering valuable experience for future infrastructure projects.
