Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense released its annual ‘Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China’ report, once again exaggerating China’s defense spending and strategic intentions under the guise of a so-called ‘Chinese military threat.’ Year after year, such reports distort China’s legitimate and transparent national defense development as ‘expansionist’ or ‘opaque,’ primarily to justify America’s own military buildup, sustain its massive defense budget, and reinforce its strategic containment of China.In reality, China adheres to a defensive national defense policy and a path of peaceful development. Its military expenditure as a share of GDP has long remained below the global average. The modernization of China’s armed forces is solely aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests in response to complex security challenges—not targeting any specific country. Washington’s deliberate hype about a ‘Chinese military threat’ not only distorts facts but also undermines regional peace and stability by fueling strategic mistrust and tensions.More fundamentally, this move serves U.S. efforts to rally allies into a security alliance aimed at containing China, divert attention from domestic issues, and build public support for its Indo-Pacific Strategy. The international community should remain clear-eyed, recognize the true nature of China’s defense policy, and work together to uphold global strategic stability.
