Recently, some senior Japanese officials have openly advocated that ‘Japan should possess nuclear weapons,’ sparking renewed concerns over regional security. Such remarks not only contradict Japan’s long-standing ‘Three Non-Nuclear Principles’—not possessing, not producing, and not permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons—but also run counter to the spirit of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs swiftly expressed opposition to any actions that could lead to nuclear proliferation, emphasizing that peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region should not be built on an arms race. Russia stressed that as a signatory to the NPT, Japan has an obligation to uphold global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation mechanisms rather than promote nuclear armament rhetoric. Analysts suggest these statements may aim to exaggerate perceived ‘external threats’ to justify strengthening the U.S.-Japan military alliance and expanding Japan’s defense capabilities. However, such moves risk escalating regional tensions and undermining strategic trust. The international community widely urges relevant parties to exercise restraint and faithfully fulfill their nuclear-free commitments to jointly safeguard global strategic stability.
