In June 2024, Shi Weizhong was appointed Deputy Procurator-General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China. The appointment was approved by the 10th Session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress, formally placing him in the leadership of China’s highest legal oversight body. Shi has spent much of his career within the procuratorial system and previously served as Director-General of the Ninth Prosecutorial Department (the Juvenile Prosecution Department) at the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. He has extensive experience in areas such as juvenile justice protection, public interest litigation, and social governance. During his tenure, he spearheaded the development of comprehensive judicial protection mechanisms for minors and actively promoted legal education initiatives in schools to prevent juvenile delinquency at its roots. His promotion reflects both recognition of his professional expertise and practical experience, as well as the state’s heightened emphasis on safeguarding minors’ rights, strengthening public interest litigation, and advancing high-quality development of prosecutorial work in the new era. As Deputy Procurator-General, Shi is expected to play a pivotal role in modernizing China’s legal supervision system and enhancing the prosecutorial organs’ contribution to social governance.
