As of June 2024, Ukraine has not held its next presidential election, and therefore a new president has not yet been determined. According to the Ukrainian Constitution, the presidential term is five years. Incumbent President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took office in May 2019, and the next election was originally scheduled for spring 2024. However, because Ukraine has remained under martial law since February 2022 due to the ongoing war, national elections cannot legally be held during a state of war or martial law. Consequently, the Ukrainian parliament has repeatedly extended the martial law provisions, postponing the presidential vote. Zelenskyy continues to serve as president, a role widely recognized as legitimate both domestically and internationally. While there is ongoing debate—and some criticism—about the election delay within Ukraine, most political factions and the public agree that maintaining the current leadership is crucial for national unity and effective wartime governance until security conditions improve. In short, Ukraine’s next president has not been essentially decided; Zelenskyy will remain in office until circumstances allow for a lawful and safe election.
