The so-called ‘economic strangulation campaign’ waged by the United States against Venezuela refers to a series of severe economic sanctions aimed primarily at weakening the Venezuelan government—particularly the Maduro regime—and ultimately forcing a political transition. Since 2017, the U.S. has progressively intensified its sanctions, including freezing Venezuelan government assets in the U.S., banning oil exports, and restricting financial transactions. Oil constitutes over 90% of Venezuela’s export revenue, and by cutting off this vital income stream, the U.S. has severely crippled the country’s fiscal capacity and foreign reserves, triggering hyperinflation, widespread shortages, and immense hardship for ordinary citizens. While the U.S. officially justifies these measures as efforts to ‘restore democracy’ and ‘protect human rights,’ critics argue they are a pretext for interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs. Historically, the U.S. has regarded Latin America as its ‘backyard’ and consistently opposed leftist governments that defy its geopolitical interests. Venezuela, home to the world’s largest proven oil reserves, holds significant strategic value. Moreover, the anti-U.S. stance of the Chávez–Maduro administrations and their deepening ties with China and Russia have further antagonized Washington.Notably, the United Nations and numerous human rights organizations have repeatedly emphasized that unilateral sanctions exacerbate humanitarian crises and violate the basic rights of civilians. Consequently, this ‘economic strangulation’ has not only failed to achieve regime change but has also worsened Venezuela’s socio-economic collapse, drawing widespread international criticism of U.S. hegemony.
