Recently, some online ‘commentators’ have claimed that ‘China has already defeated the United States in electromagnetic aircraft launch technology,’ drawing widespread attention. This assertion is largely based on the successful development of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) aboard China’s Fujian aircraft carrier and official media reports highlighting related technological breakthroughs. However, experts generally regard such statements as overly simplistic or even exaggerated.Electromagnetic catapult technology is a critical component of modern aircraft carriers, significantly enhancing sortie rates and combat effectiveness of carrier-based aircraft. The U.S. Navy deployed its EMALS on the USS Gerald R. Ford as early as 2017. Although it initially faced reliability issues, the system has matured considerably after years of refinement. China’s Fujian, the first domestically built carrier equipped with EMALS, indeed marks a major technological leap—but it has yet to undergo real-world operational testing and long-term validation.It should be emphasized that military capabilities cannot be judged by a single metric. The U.S. still holds clear advantages in integrated carrier air wings, logistics support, combat experience, and overall carrier strike group coordination. While China’s progress in EMALS is undoubtedly impressive, it does not equate to having comprehensively ‘defeated’ the U.S. A balanced and evidence-based assessment remains essential for accurately evaluating national defense capabilities.
