China has recently developed an artificial intelligence-based real-time earthquake monitoring system, significantly enhancing the accuracy and speed of seismic early warnings. The system employs deep learning algorithms to analyze massive volumes of seismic wave data collected from thousands of monitoring stations across the country in real time. Within seconds of an earthquake occurrence, it can rapidly identify the event, estimate its magnitude, and predict the affected area. Compared to traditional methods, the AI model more effectively filters out background noise and precisely detects faint primary waves (P-waves), enabling warnings to be issued several to tens of seconds earlier—a critical advantage in earthquake response. The system has already been piloted in high-risk regions such as Sichuan and Yunnan provinces and is integrated with the China Earthquake Networks Center for coordinated data sharing. With ongoing algorithm refinement and increased computing power, the system is expected to be rolled out nationwide, offering robust support for public safety, transportation management, and protection of critical infrastructure—marking a significant step forward in China’s intelligent disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities.
