The H200 chip, unveiled by NVIDIA in late 2023 as the successor to the H100, delivers significant improvements in memory bandwidth, capacity, and energy efficiency. Despite its impressive technical specs, the H200 finds itself ‘born at the wrong time.’ On one hand, global AI enthusiasm has driven soaring demand for high-performance computing chips; on the other, U.S. export controls restrict its sale to key markets like China. Meanwhile, competitors such as AMD and domestic AI chipmakers are rapidly closing the gap, eroding NVIDIA’s first-mover advantage. Moreover, as large AI models shift focus from training to cost-efficient inference, customers are increasingly prioritizing value over raw performance. Consequently, while the H200 represents the current pinnacle of AI hardware technology, its commercial potential is constrained by geopolitical tensions, evolving market demands, and intensifying competition—making it a textbook case of ‘critical acclaim but limited market success.’
