Recently, the popular tea brand ‘Heytea’ (marketed as ‘Ba Wang Cha Ji’ in China) has drawn public attention due to concerns over high caffeine content in some of its beverages—reportedly exceeding that of certain coffees—raising health worries among consumers. In response, the Shanghai Anti-Drug Committee Office clarified that the issue is unrelated to narcotics and emphasized that while caffeine is a strictly regulated psychotropic substance under national law, its use in food and beverages within legal limits is entirely permissible. The office noted that although caffeine appears on China’s official list of controlled psychotropic substances, its presence in drinks is lawful as long as it complies with national food safety standards. Authorities have urged the company to clearly label caffeine levels on its products to ensure consumer awareness. They also advised the public—especially sensitive groups such as pregnant women, adolescents, and individuals with caffeine sensitivity—to consume such beverages in moderation or avoid them altogether. This statement aims to dispel public misconceptions and prevent confusion between legal food additives and illicit drugs. Experts recommend that the beverage industry enhance self-regulation and product transparency to promote healthier consumption habits. Heytea has since published caffeine test results for select drinks on its official channels and pledged to refine its recipes to better meet diverse consumer needs.
