In recent years, as global semiconductor competition intensifies and technological evolution accelerates, chip giants like Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA have strategically exited or significantly scaled back investments in certain previously promising sub-sectors. These ‘abandoned’ segments include consumer-grade FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays), low-power IoT MCUs (Microcontroller Units), and some analog chip businesses based on mature process nodes.Three main factors drive this shift: severe market fragmentation that hinders economies of scale, low profit margins inconsistent with the giants’ high-margin strategies, and slow technological iteration lacking long-term growth potential. For instance, Intel announced in 2023 its gradual exit from the low-power IoT chip market to focus resources on AI accelerators and advanced-node CPUs. Similarly, AMD divested its embedded MCU division years ago to concentrate on high-performance computing and data center GPUs.Importantly, the retreat of industry giants doesn’t mean these segments lack value. Instead, it opens opportunities for smaller chip design firms and domestic Chinese companies. Amid trends of localization and vertical integration, these ‘discarded’ niches could foster new specialized, innovative SMEs—so-called ‘little giant’ enterprises. Thus, strategic contraction by chip titans reflects both a sharpened focus on core competencies and a pivotal signal of ecosystem realignment across the semiconductor supply chain.
