Unlike earlier drills—typically limited to single service branches and specific maritime zones—current exercises feature joint operations across multiple military services, comprehensive encirclement, and a high degree of realism. For instance, following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 2022 visit to Taiwan, the PLA launched live-fire drills simultaneously in six directions around the island for the first time, involving naval, ground, air, and Rocket Force units, effectively establishing a full encirclement posture. In contrast, past exercises were mostly confined to waters west of the so-called ‘median line’ of the Taiwan Strait and focused on defensive scenarios. Today’s drills emphasize rapid response, integrated joint operations, and incorporate modern warfare elements such as electronic and information warfare, highlighting a clear shift from training to combat readiness. Moreover, exercise zones now routinely approach or even cross the so-called ‘median line’ and enter Taiwan’s self-declared Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), sending an unambiguous message against ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists and their external backers. Overall, PLA exercises near Taiwan have evolved from symbolic deterrence into high-intensity, regularized combat-preparedness operations, serving as a critical instrument for upholding national unity and regional stability.
