In recent years, China’s securities industry has undergone significant workforce adjustments. According to the latest data from the Securities Association of China, as of the end of 2023, the total number of securities professionals nationwide had declined to approximately 320,000—roughly the same level as in 2017, effectively bringing headcounts back to where they were six years ago. Several factors drive this trend: first, rapid advancements in financial technology have led to automation and intelligent systems replacing traditional roles such as counter operations and basic customer service; second, tightening regulatory oversight and persistently declining commission rates have squeezed profit margins, especially for smaller brokerages, forcing them to streamline staffing and control costs; third, many firms have proactively eliminated underperforming departments during strategic business transformations. Notably, while overall headcount has decreased, the proportion of highly educated and multidisciplinary talent has increased, signaling a shift from labor-intensive to knowledge-intensive operations. Going forward, competition among brokerages will hinge more on technological capabilities, investment research strength, and comprehensive financial service offerings rather than sheer workforce size.
