In May 2024, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army conducted large-scale joint military exercises in the sea and airspace surrounding Taiwan. In response, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) stated clearly that these drills are a justified and necessary measure in response to the current cross-strait situation, particularly provocations by ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces. The TAO emphasized that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and any attempts to split the country or undermine social stability will be firmly opposed and effectively countered. The military exercises aim to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, deter ‘Taiwan independence’ activities and external interference, and demonstrate the mainland’s unwavering commitment to upholding the one-China principle. The TAO urged Taiwan authorities to recognize the prevailing historical trend, abandon illusions of seeking ‘U.S.-backed independence,’ and return to the right path of peaceful cross-strait development. While adhering to the basic policy of ‘peaceful reunification under one country, two systems’ and striving for the prospect of peaceful reunification, the mainland side reserves the right to use all necessary means—this stance targets external interference and a tiny minority of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists, not the general public in Taiwan.
