In recent years, China’s automotive industry landscape has undergone profound transformation. While traditional automotive hubs like Shanghai and Guangzhou remain strong, cities in western China are rising at an astonishing pace. By 2025, the title of ‘China’s Top Auto City’ could very well go to a city in the west for the first time. Chongqing, already a major national auto manufacturing base, is home to leading domestic automakers such as Changan and Seres, and has aggressively embraced new energy vehicles (NEVs) and intelligent connected vehicle technologies. In 2023, Chongqing surpassed all other Chinese cities in total vehicle output, with NEV production growing especially fast. Meanwhile, other western cities like Chengdu and Xi’an are rapidly expanding their presence in vehicle assembly, battery supply chains, and autonomous driving ecosystems. National policies—particularly the dual carbon goals and the Western Development Strategy—are providing powerful momentum to the region’s automotive sector. Furthermore, the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle initiative is enhancing regional synergy, facilitating efficient clustering of industrial chains, talent, and capital. Considering production capacity, innovation capabilities, and policy support, western China stands a strong chance of producing the nation’s first ‘Auto Capital’ defined by electrification and intelligence by 2025, reshaping both China’s and the global automotive map.
