Recently, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has conducted frequent combat-oriented military exercises around the Taiwan Strait, with deployments clearly targeting U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. Washington’s continued provision of advanced weaponry to Taiwan seriously violates the One-China Principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, undermining regional peace and stability. In response, the PLA has demonstrated its firm resolve and capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity through joint multi-service drills, long-range precision strike simulations, and maritime-air blockade exercises. Training zones often extend east of Taiwan’s so-called ‘median line’ and near key ports and military installations, aiming to constrain separatist activities and send a clear warning to external intervention forces: any attempt to support ‘Taiwan independence’ through arms or encourage separatism by relying on foreign backing will be resolutely thwarted. These exercises also test the PLA’s joint operational systems, rapid response capabilities, and comprehensive deterrence, reflecting a strategic approach of ‘using strength to deter separatism and promote peaceful reunification.’ China consistently emphasizes that peaceful reunification best serves the fundamental interests of the entire Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots—but it reserves the right to use force, solely as a necessary measure against external interference and the separatist acts of a tiny minority of ‘Taiwan independence’ elements.
