Recently, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak has been reported in Japan’s Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo Metropolis and surrounding prefectures such as Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. This marks the first detection in recent years of highly pathogenic strains like H5N1 in either commercial poultry farms or wild birds in the region. In response, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries swiftly implemented containment measures, including culling all poultry at affected farms, establishing quarantine zones, restricting the movement of birds and related products, and intensifying surveillance and disinfection in neighboring areas.HPAI primarily spreads via migratory birds but can also be transmitted through contaminated equipment, vehicles, or personnel. While there is currently no evidence of efficient human-to-human transmission, the virus poses a severe threat to the poultry industry and may disrupt the supply and pricing of eggs and chicken meat. Health authorities reassure the public that properly cooked poultry and eggs remain safe to consume, though direct contact with sick or dead birds should be avoided. The Japanese government has pledged continued collaboration with international organizations to strengthen border controls and domestic biosecurity measures to prevent further spread. This incident once again underscores the critical importance of global cooperation in animal disease prevention and control.
