Starting January 1, 2024, China’s digital yuan (e-CNY) will begin accruing interest on certain wallet accounts, marking a significant step toward aligning its functionality with traditional bank deposits. This upgrade, led by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), aims to enhance the appeal and adoption of e-CNY while reinforcing its role as a legal tender with expanded financial attributes.According to official guidelines, interest will apply primarily to Tier-1 and Tier-2 verified e-CNY wallets, with rates benchmarked against prevailing bank demand deposit rates. Major state-owned banks such as ICBC and CCB will set specific rates under PBOC supervision. Interest will be calculated daily and credited quarterly—automatically, without requiring user action. This move not only incentivizes users to hold e-CNY over longer periods but also promotes its deeper integration into everyday scenarios like retail payments, government subsidies, and salary disbursements. Moreover, the introduction of interest helps differentiate e-CNY from third-party payment platforms like Alipay and WeChat Pay, highlighting its dual nature as both ‘quasi-cash’ and ‘quasi-deposit.’It should be noted that not all e-CNY wallets qualify for interest. Anonymous or lower-tier wallets (e.g., Tier-3 and Tier-4), which lack full identity verification, are currently excluded. As pilot programs expand and technology matures, the interest policy may be further refined to support a more efficient and secure digital financial infrastructure.
