In recent years, the ‘parent volunteer duty’—a system where parents take turns assisting with student safety during school drop-off and pick-up times—has been implemented in many primary and secondary schools across China. While officially described as voluntary and a form of home-school collaboration, growing controversy surrounds its true voluntariness. On one hand, schools insist participation is entirely optional; on the other, numerous parents report experiencing subtle pressure to join, such as concerns that non-participation might affect their child’s treatment at school or lead to indirect reminders from teachers. Some question: if it’s truly voluntary, why are there mandatory sign-up rosters, attendance tracking, or even inclusion in class performance evaluations? Although education authorities repeatedly state that participation must not be compulsory, the lack of clear oversight allows ‘soft coercion’ to persist. Experts suggest redesigning the system—for example, by involving community volunteers or professional security personnel instead of relying solely on parents—or by establishing transparent, opt-in mechanisms with formal grievance channels. While the initiative’s goal of enhancing student safety is commendable, only by genuinely respecting parental autonomy can schools foster healthy collaboration rather than unintended stress and conflict.
