This shift responds to escalating threats from North Korea’s nuclear program and evolving regional security dynamics, while also reflecting Seoul’s ambition to enhance its strategic relevance amid global supply chain realignments and technological competition. At the same time, South Korea has not entirely abandoned multilateralism or multi-vector diplomacy; rather, it seeks a new equilibrium between values-based approaches and interest-driven strategies. Thus, it is fair to say that South Korea is embracing a ‘new pragmatism’ in foreign policy—one centered on national interest and flexible adaptation to a volatile international landscape.
