Vietnam has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years and is often hailed as the ‘next Asian Tiger.’ However, its development faces several structural ceilings. First, lagging infrastructure hampers industrial upgrading. While manufacturing continues to attract substantial foreign investment, inadequate power supply, transportation networks, and port facilities limit the establishment of high-value-added industries. Second, there’s a mismatch between workforce skills and the education system. Although Vietnam still benefits from a demographic dividend, it suffers from shortages of skilled technicians and high-end talent, making a transition to smart manufacturing and the digital economy difficult. Third, institutional barriers—such as bureaucratic inefficiency, low policy transparency, and a weak rule-of-law environment—undermine long-term investor confidence. Moreover, Vietnam’s heavy reliance on export-oriented growth leaves it vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions, while its domestic consumer market remains underdeveloped. Finally, geopolitical risks loom large: while balancing between U.S.-China rivalry offers opportunities, it also exposes Vietnam to external pressures. Without addressing these bottlenecks, Vietnam may struggle to escape the middle-income trap.
