Recently, two oil tankers collided near Turkish waters, drawing international attention to maritime safety and environmental protection. According to Turkey’s maritime authorities, the incident occurred in the Sea of Marmara, south of the Bosphorus Strait. The vessels involved were a large crude oil tanker flying the flag of Liberia and a refined product tanker registered under Panama. The collision caused hull damage to one vessel and resulted in a minor oil leak, though fortunately no major environmental damage or casualties were reported.Turkish Coast Guard immediately activated its emergency response protocol, dispatching patrol boats and oil-spill cleanup vessels to the scene and imposing temporary traffic restrictions in surrounding waters. The leak has since been contained, and an investigation is underway. Preliminary findings suggest poor visibility and possible navigational errors may have contributed to the accident. This incident once again highlights the high-risk nature of the Black Sea–Mediterranean shipping corridor. The Bosphorus Strait—the sole passage linking the Black Sea to the Mediterranean—is one of the world’s busiest and most hazardous maritime chokepoints, with dozens of large vessels transiting daily through its narrow, complex currents. Experts are urging enhanced vessel traffic management, improved crew training standards, and stronger regional cooperation to establish more effective maritime emergency response systems to prevent future collisions.
