Recently, multiple Chinese diaspora associations in Panama have jointly called on the government to prioritize and accelerate the restoration and preservation of the ‘Chinese Park’ (Parque Chino). Located in the historic Chinatown district of Panama City, the park was established as a cultural landmark to honor the contributions of Chinese immigrants to Panama’s national development. Since the early 20th century, Chinese immigrants have played a vital role in constructing the Panama Railway and Canal and in advancing the country’s commercial growth—contributions symbolized by this park. However, due to years of neglect, the park has suffered from deteriorating facilities, poor sanitation, and damage to its cultural elements, sparking strong concern within the local Chinese community. In response, over ten organizations—including the Panama Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association—issued a joint statement emphasizing that the Chinese Park belongs not only to the Chinese community but also represents an integral part of Panama’s multicultural heritage deserving of official recognition and investment.Representatives of these groups urged the government to include the park in urban renewal initiatives and involve the community in its redesign and management, transforming it into a showcase for China-Panama friendship and cultural exchange. The initiative has garnered support from several local politicians and cultural organizations, who view the park’s restoration as a step toward greater social inclusivity and historical awareness.
