In June 2024, the Hubei Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision announced that Zhou Xianwang, former Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor of Wuhan, was expelled from both the Chinese Communist Party and public office (commonly referred to as ‘double dismissal’) due to serious violations of discipline and law. The investigation revealed that Zhou had abandoned his ideals and betrayed his original mission. He abused his position to seek benefits for others in areas such as promotions and construction contracts, accepting massive bribes. Particularly egregious was his long-term engagement in power-for-sex transactions and moral corruption, constituting severe breaches of Party discipline and suspected bribery offenses. His actions were deemed extremely harmful and damaging to the Party’s reputation, leading to strict legal consequences. Zhou’s downfall reaffirms the Chinese Communist Party’s unwavering stance against corruption—leaving no禁区 (forbidden zones), ensuring full coverage, and maintaining zero tolerance. It also serves as a stark warning to officials at all levels to strictly abide by Party discipline and laws and uphold integrity. His suspected criminal case has now been transferred to prosecutors for formal review and indictment.
