Recently, some Western media outlets and politicians have claimed that ‘Chinese vessels are everywhere around Greenland,’ attempting to fuel narratives about China’s so-called ‘expansion of influence in the Arctic.’ In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly refuted these allegations, stating they are factually inaccurate and clearly biased or misleading.China emphasized that it consistently respects the sovereignty and maritime rights of Arctic states, including Greenland, and conducts only lawful scientific research, fishing, and shipping activities in accordance with international regulations. As a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), China ensures all its maritime operations strictly comply with international law. The claim of a ‘massive presence of Chinese vessels near Greenland’ lacks credible evidence; vessel tracking data often conflates civilian fishing boats, research vessels, and commercial ships—sometimes even misidentifying routine transit traffic as strategic deployments, leading to exaggeration and misinterpretation.Moreover, since releasing its Arctic Policy white paper in 2018, China has consistently advocated participation in Arctic affairs based on the principles of ‘respect, cooperation, mutual benefit, and sustainability,’ not geopolitical expansion. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has repeatedly expressed openness to transparent and mutually beneficial cooperation. China urges relevant parties to abandon Cold War mentalities and view China’s legitimate and peaceful activities in the Arctic objectively, working together to uphold peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
