Recently, China’s industrial economy has continued to show strong momentum. Following Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Guangzhou, another city is on the verge of joining the ranks of ‘five-trillion-yuan industrial metropolises’—a designation referring to cities whose output value of large-scale industrial enterprises exceeds RMB 5 trillion. This milestone not only reflects a city’s manufacturing scale and strength but also underscores its strategic position in global supply chains.Cities such as Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Ningbo are accelerating their efforts to reach this target. Take Chengdu as an example: driven by rapid growth in sectors like electronics, equipment manufacturing, and aerospace, its large-scale industrial output neared RMB 4.8 trillion in 2023, just shy of the five-trillion mark. Local governments are further boosting industrial growth through measures like improving the business environment, increasing investment in technological innovation, and fostering industrial clusters. The emergence of a second five-trillion-yuan industrial city signals not only the expanding footprint of Chinese manufacturing but also the success of regional coordination and industrial upgrading strategies. As China deepens its new-type industrialization drive, more cities are expected to join this elite group, providing robust support for the high-quality development of ‘Made in China.’
