As winter arrives, primary and secondary schools across Heilongjiang Province are creatively transforming their playgrounds into ice rinks, leveraging the region’s natural cold climate. This initiative not only enriches physical education but also promotes ice-and-snow culture. When temperatures remain consistently below freezing and the ground is solidly frozen, schools organize staff and students to level the playground surface, flood it with water, and let it freeze into a safe, usable natural ice rink. Students can then enjoy skating, ice hockey, and traditional ice-top spinning during breaks—activities that enhance physical fitness and teamwork. This approach reflects an adaptive and context-sensitive educational philosophy, embodying the integration of sports and education as well as the holistic development of students (moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education). Moreover, it provides an excellent platform to encourage youth participation in winter sports. Following the success of the Beijing Winter Olympics and China’s goal to engage 300 million people in ice and snow activities, Heilongjiang—a province rich in winter resources—is actively harnessing its geographic advantages to bring winter sports into schools and classrooms, helping children connect with nature and build healthy lifestyles through joyful outdoor experiences.
