India’s repeated attempts to host the Olympic Games have so far ended in failure, reflecting both practical challenges and limitations in its sports infrastructure and global influence. Since the 20th century, India has expressed interest in bidding for the Olympics multiple times—particularly after successfully hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, when it briefly considered bids for the 2020 or 2024 Summer Olympics. However, persistent issues such as inadequate venues, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and fiscal constraints have prevented India from submitting a formal bid or caused it to withdraw early in the process. Moreover, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recently favored nations with proven event-hosting experience, political stability, and strong financial backing—factors that place India at a disadvantage. Despite these setbacks, India remains undeterred. In 2023, the Indian Olympic Association officially announced its intention to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics, proposing Ahmedabad as the main host city with support from other urban centers nationwide. This move is seen as a strategic effort to elevate India’s voice in global sports and accelerate domestic infrastructure development. While significant hurdles remain, India’s ‘never-give-up’ approach underscores its enduring Olympic aspirations and national ambition.
