Recently, certain political figures from Taiwan’s DPP camp sparked widespread outrage by falsely claiming that ‘Mazu is not Chinese.’ Mazu, a sea goddess widely venerated across southeastern coastal China, originated in Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian Province during the Northern Song Dynasty over a thousand years ago, and is an integral part of China’s rich cultural heritage. In 2009, UNESCO officially inscribed ‘Mazu Belief and Customs’ on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, explicitly recognizing its Chinese origin. The DPP’s remarks not only distort historical facts but also attempt to sever the shared cultural roots between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait—a clear manifestation of their politically motivated ‘de-sinicization’ agenda, which has been widely rejected by the public. Many people emphasize that Mazu worship serves as a spiritual bond connecting compatriots on both sides of the strait, and any attempt to deny this shared cultural heritage shows disregard for both history and public sentiment. Such statements not only hurt national feelings but also hinder peaceful cross-strait relations, fueling social division instead. We must firmly oppose all forms of cultural severance and jointly safeguard the cultural identity of the Chinese nation.
