Recently, China’s deepest offshore wind power project—the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou Phase V Offshore Wind Farm—successfully achieved grid connection and began generating electricity. Located approximately 70 kilometers south of Yangjiang City in Guangdong Province in the South China Sea, the project sits in waters with an average depth of 45 meters and a maximum depth exceeding 50 meters, setting a new record for water depth among China’s operational offshore wind farms. With a total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—enough to power about 1.3 million households. The project employs advanced typhoon-resistant wind turbines and deep-water offshore engineering technologies, overcoming challenges such as strong winds, high waves, and complex seabed geology. Its successful grid integration marks a significant breakthrough in China’s development of deep-sea offshore wind energy, enhancing clean energy supply and providing valuable experience for future large-scale, deeper-water projects. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in optimizing the energy mix of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and advancing China’s ‘dual carbon’ goals.
