Recently, Guizhou province transformed a hillside into what’s being dubbed a ‘giant power bank,’ drawing widespread attention. In reality, this project is a large-scale pumped-storage hydropower station. It leverages the elevation difference between two reservoirs: during periods of surplus electricity, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper one for storage; during peak demand or power shortages, the stored water is released to generate electricity—effectively ‘storing’ and ‘releasing’ energy. This technology, often referred to as a ‘physical battery,’ offers significant advantages including high storage capacity, long service life, and enhanced safety. Guizhou’s mountainous terrain and abundant water resources make it ideally suited for such facilities. Beyond improving grid flexibility and peak-load regulation, the station also helps integrate intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar power, supporting China’s dual carbon goals. Once fully operational, this ‘hillside power bank’ will serve as a key green energy hub in Southwest China, providing stable support to the regional power system.
