Recently, a group of prominent Japanese scholars jointly issued a statement urging the government to uphold the ‘Three Non-Nuclear Principles’—namely, not possessing, not producing, and not permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons into Japan. They emphasized that these principles are vital for maintaining regional peace and upholding Japan’s post-war pacifist identity. The scholars warned that amid today’s complex and volatile global security environment—where some nations are expanding their nuclear arsenals and domestic voices in Japan occasionally advocate for nuclear armament—abandoning the non-nuclear stance would not only damage Japan’s long-standing image as a peaceful nation but could also trigger a regional arms race in East Asia, heightening tensions. They further called on the government to strengthen cooperation with the international community on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, advancing the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons. Highlighting Japan’s unique moral responsibility as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings, they argued that Japan must continue to lead global anti-nuclear initiatives. The appeal has garnered widespread support from civil society groups and the public, reflecting deep societal sensitivity and vigilance regarding nuclear weapons.
