The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has recently announced two new traffic regulations aimed at enhancing road safety and improving public transport efficiency. The first regulation prohibits the use of electric personal mobility devices—such as e-scooters and self-balancing hoverboards—on public roads unless special permits are granted. This measure responds to a rising number of traffic incidents involving these devices, which are not designed to meet current road safety standards and pose significant safety risks. The second regulation focuses on optimizing enforcement of bus-only lanes. Starting immediately, the Transport Department will enhance its electronic surveillance systems to detect and penalize unauthorized use of bus lanes more effectively, along with increasing the associated fines. Additionally, operating hours for bus-only lanes on certain high-traffic routes will be extended to ensure smoother public transport flow during peak periods. The government states that this initiative encourages greater use of public transportation, reduces private vehicle usage, and helps alleviate congestion and lower carbon emissions. Both regulations officially took effect in June 2024. The Transport and Logistics Bureau urges the public to comply with these measures to jointly foster a safer and more efficient urban transportation environment.
