Mercury thermometers were once widely used due to their high accuracy, but their core component—elemental mercury—is highly toxic and poses serious risks to human health and the environment. If a thermometer breaks, mercury vapor quickly evaporates into the air; inhalation can damage the nervous system, kidneys, and lungs, with children and pregnant women being especially vulnerable. Moreover, improperly disposed mercury thermometers can leach mercury into soil and water, where it bioaccumulates through the food chain, ultimately endangering human health. To address this global environmental and health hazard, the Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted in 2013. As a signatory, China has committed to phasing out mercury-containing products. Starting in 2026, the country will fully ban the production of mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers. This move not only reduces sources of mercury pollution but also accelerates the shift toward safer, eco-friendly alternatives like digital thermometers. Modern digital thermometers are non-toxic, user-friendly, faster, and increasingly accurate—meeting both everyday and clinical needs effectively. The comprehensive ban on mercury thermometer production reflects China’s commitment to green development, fulfills its international environmental obligations, and safeguards public health and the well-being of future generations.
