Recently, China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) issued a notice explicitly prohibiting minors from portraying adult-themed characters such as the ‘domineering CEO’—a popular archetype in online novels and short videos. This fictional character is typically depicted as wealthy, emotionally cold, and excessively controlling. In recent years, some short-video platforms have featured children imitating these personas, sparking public concern over the potential psychological and developmental impact on young audiences. The NRTA emphasized that such content contradicts the natural cognitive and emotional development of minors and may distort their understanding of healthy relationships, power dynamics, and social values. The notice bans all audiovisual programs and online platforms from arranging or encouraging minors to perform in roles involving romantic plots, corporate intrigue, or other adult themes inappropriate for their age group—particularly the ‘domineering CEO’ trope. This move is part of broader efforts to regulate the digital content ecosystem for children and safeguard their healthy development. Experts urge platforms to strengthen content moderation and call on parents to enhance their media literacy to jointly foster a safer, more age-appropriate online environment.
