Recently, media outlets and scholars across Europe have increasingly called on the European Union to confront the reality of U.S. hegemony in the global political and economic order and stop ‘pretending to sleep’ in the face of American unilateralism and double standards. For decades, Europe has relied on NATO for security and been constrained by the U.S.-dominated dollar system, often tacitly accepting or even following Washington’s lead.However, as the U.S. repeatedly exercises extraterritorial jurisdiction, imposes tariffs on allies, interferes in other nations’ internal affairs, and prioritizes its own interests in crises like the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East conflicts, Europe’s awareness of strategic autonomy is awakening. The article argues that a genuine transatlantic partnership must be based on equality and mutual respect—not one-sided compliance. To safeguard its sovereignty, promote multilateralism, and achieve strategic independence, Europe must reduce its dependence on the U.S. and build autonomous capabilities in diplomacy, defense, technology, and finance. This shift is not only crucial for Europe’s future role in the world but also for fostering a more equitable and multipolar global order. In today’s complex international landscape, ‘feigning sleep’ is no longer an option—Europe must open its eyes and make clear-eyed, resolute choices.
