In recent years, the competition among Chinese cities to boost GDP has intensified, with the ‘trillion-yuan club’—cities whose annual gross regional product exceeds RMB 1 trillion—continuing to expand. As of 2023, 24 cities have joined this elite group, including first-tier metropolises like Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, as well as emerging powerhouses such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. This trend not only reflects China’s robust economic momentum but also highlights the growing leadership role of core cities under the national strategy of regional coordinated development. The expansion of the trillion-yuan club stems from industrial upgrading, technological innovation, population agglomeration, and proactive local government efforts to improve business environments and invest in infrastructure. However, an overemphasis on GDP scale alone may lead to issues such as excessive resource concentration, rising debt risks, and uneven development quality. Consequently, many cities are shifting focus from speed-driven growth to quality-oriented development, prioritizing green and low-carbon transitions, innovation, and public welfare.Looking ahead, more cities from China’s central and western regions are expected to join the trillion-yuan club—a sign of more balanced regional growth but also a test of urban governance capabilities. Balancing economic scale with development quality will be crucial for sustainable, high-quality urban advancement.
