Cherries—commonly known as ‘cherries’ or ‘cheery’ in China—are often shipped from countries like Chile or the United States to China via sea freight, a journey that can take up to one month, yet they arrive fresh and unspoiled. This is made possible through advanced cold-chain logistics and post-harvest technologies. Immediately after harvest, cherries are rapidly pre-cooled to 0–2°C within hours to suppress respiration and microbial growth. Throughout transportation, they remain in temperature-controlled environments, typically inside refrigerated containers equipped with controlled atmosphere (CA) technology, which adjusts oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to further delay ripening and senescence. Additionally, rigorous grading, sanitization before export, and the use of food-grade packaging or breathable films significantly extend shelf life. It’s also worth noting that cherry varieties selected for long-distance export usually have thicker skins, firmer flesh, and better storability—traits essential for surviving extended transit. As a result, despite the lengthy shipping time, imported cherries available in Chinese markets retain their vibrant color and crisp, sweet flavor.
