In recent years, many depositors have noticed that banks seem less eager to accept deposits: interest rates keep falling, and some banks even set thresholds or politely decline large deposits. Several factors explain this shift. First, in the current macroeconomic environment, overall credit demand is weak. Even if banks attract substantial deposits, they struggle to find high-quality lending opportunities, leading to higher costs from idle funds. Second, regulatory requirements have tightened—metrics like the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) and Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR) push banks to optimize their liability structures. Overreliance on short-term deposits can create compliance risks. Third, banks’ net interest margins continue to narrow; while deposit rates are low, operational and interest expenses remain, making deposit-taking unprofitable if loans cannot be effectively issued. Additionally, digital transformation has shifted banks’ focus toward fee-based, capital-light businesses rather than traditional interest spreads. Consequently, banks are moving from a “scale-driven” to a “profitability-driven” model, becoming more selective about inefficient or costly deposits. This trend is likely to persist in the near term, prompting depositors to adapt by diversifying their asset allocation.
