In recent years, the development of large AI models in China has shown a clear trend toward differentiation. On one hand, tech giants such as Baidu (ERNIE Bot), Alibaba (Tongyi Qianwen), Tencent (HunYuan), and Huawei (Pangu) continue to invest heavily, driving breakthroughs in general-purpose capabilities, multimodal integration, and industry-specific applications. On the other hand, a growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises and startups are focusing on vertical domains—such as finance, healthcare, legal services, and education—to develop specialized models that are more precise and efficient. This dual-track approach of ‘general-purpose + specialized’ models reflects both the intrinsic logic of technological evolution and the diverse demands of the Chinese market. Moreover, factors like government policy guidance, computing costs, and data compliance requirements are accelerating this divergence. Looking ahead, general-purpose large models may evolve into foundational infrastructure, while domain-specific models will deliver tangible value through real-world applications—working in tandem to shape a new ecosystem for artificial intelligence in China.
