Recently, reports claiming that ‘Japan’s electromagnetic railgun can sink aircraft carriers’ have sparked widespread attention. In fact, Japan has indeed conducted research into electromagnetic railgun technology, but it remains in the laboratory or early testing phase, with no operational deployment to date. Railguns use electromagnetic force—rather than chemical propellants—to launch projectiles, theoretically offering high muzzle velocity, long range, and lower cost per shot, making them a potentially disruptive future naval weapon. However, countries including the U.S. and China still face major technical hurdles such as power supply, rail erosion, and heat dissipation. Although Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has released test footage of small-scale prototypes, these systems are limited in range and scale, far from being capable of threatening modern aircraft carriers. The claim of ‘sinking a carrier’ is largely media exaggeration or misunderstanding; in reality, a modern carrier operates within a robust defensive network of escort ships and layered defenses, making it extremely difficult for any single weapon to deliver a decisive blow. While Japan continues foundational research on railguns, practical military application remains distant, and such reports should be viewed with caution.
